The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) gives people with disability choice and control over the supports they receive. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has been developed to improve choice and create better outcomes for people with a disability. NDIS funds any goal that you set for yourself (those that NDIS considers reasonable and fair of course) and you are free to choose any NDIS service provider you want. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is a federally appointed organisation that manages the administration of all NDIS funding. They are funded by the Department of Social Services (DSS).

To apply to become an NDIS participant you must:

Be an Australian citizen or hold a permanent visa or a Protected Special Category visa

Experiencing a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities

Must be aged under 65 years at the time you register for an assessment with the NDIA.

Goals describe what you want to achieve, develop, or learn. A short-term goal is something that you want to achieve in 12 months and a long-term goal is achievable in a few years. All the supports that the NDIS funds is directly linked to achieving your goals.

The NDIS participant portal is called myplace. It is a secure website for participants or their nominee to view their NDIS plan, request payments and manage services with providers.

You will receive a notification from the NDIS by your preferred mode of communication (usually email or letter) to let you know your new plan is active. It will contain your myplace portal activation code, which expires within 10 days. About 24 hours after your plan has been approved, it will be available on the NDIS myplace portal. You will usually also receive a printed copy of your plan in the mail.
